Inspiring Photos: Maya - The Orange-Breasted Falcon

As part of our Conservation Partners Program, we want to introduce you to Maya - one of the last of the orange-breasted falcons (Falco deiroleucus) in the world.

Not only is she beautiful, but as you can see by the look in her eyes, she is intelligent, very intelligent.  Her species are native to Central America, and especially Belize and Guatemala.  More importantly, Maya is the ambassador for her species at the Belize Raptor Center, a center for raptor conservation located just outside of San Ignacio Belize.

Our time with Maya is always a special one to us, not only because of her beauty, but because we have the unique opportunity to be this close to a species on the brink of extinction. You see, there are less than 50 of her kind left in the world, and that makes her species one of the most endangered of her kind on the planet.

Maya’s species are endangered because we, as humans, don’t understand their role and importance in the complex ecosystems of Belize.  However, we are working with conservation groups to help reverse that. That’s why the support you can provide by purchasing the photos on our site is critical to the preservation of her species.

Thank you for your support! If you'd like to do more - share Maya's story with those who admire this photo. Remind them of how they can help! Together, we can make a difference.
