Nacho House Cat: A Children’s Book About Jaguars

One of the things we are most passionate about at IE is exploring innovative ways to reach new audiences on the importance of conservation, science, and the wonders of our world.

That is why we are so proud to announce the release of Ashley Moseley’s new children’s book - Nacho House Cat.

As our marketing director, Ashley has sat through numerous presentations, virtual tours, and online experiences. Along the way, she developed a special fondness for the jaguars of the Belize Zoo and Tropical Education Center, one of our conservation partners in Belize , and their Human Jaguar Conflict Program that gives a second chance to jags who have had unfortunate encounters with humans.

When she approached us about her passion for authoring a book for kids, and her new-found interest in jaguar conservation, we couldn’t have been more pleased! The founders of IE are all educators who are highly involved in the development of educational resources, including books! While we had never envisioned a children’s book about jaguars, Ashley’s enthusiasm were enough to take us on this edventure, and we are so glad we did!

I was excited by the comparison idea (jaguars vs. house cats), but also knew I lacked the science knowledge on my own; luckily for me, I’m surrounded by scientists every day

As with each of us at IE, these magnificent animals made a connection with Ashley. As one of our architects of the #Habitats4Jags campaign, Ashley wanted to make a difference in the ability of these animals to survive the challenges facing them.

Nacho House Cat was written to show (and give an element of humor) to the idea of having a jaguar as a house cat. I want to make learning fun and entertaining for kids. Additionally (and as you will see on the back cover), the jaguar that inspired this book, Filly, lives at The Belize Zoo. Filly is part of their Human Jaguar Conflict Program, which rescues “problem” jaguars. However, the conflict is rarely on the jaguar side, usually it is due to things like: habitat loss, unavailability of food, aging, and injuries. This program gives these amazing creatures a second chance at life, because they are very unique and impressive cats, but they are most definitely... Nacho House Cat!

We encourage you to follow Ashley’s passion for wildlife conservation by not only reading and recommending her book, but also by learning more about the need to protect, conserve, and learn about, these amazing animals.
